About Fargo

Fargo North Dakota is historically part of the Sioux territory. The city served as an early stopping point for steamboats traveling across the Red River in the 1870s and 1880s. Fargo's first name "Centralia" did not stick. The city is currently named after William Fargo, the Northern Pacific Railway director and Wells Fargo Express Company Founder.

The city became known as the “Gateway to the West” because of the arrival of the railroad. The city flourished until a major fire struck in 1893. The fire destroyed 31 blocks of downtown Fargo. The city was rebuilt with new brick buildings, streets, and a water system.

The city flourished again. Theodore Roosevelt visited Fargo to lay the cornerstone of the college’s new library. Roosevelt later attributed his experience to his eventual rise to the presidency.

Development in the city continued. When two interstate highways were built, it revolutionized travel in the area. Fargo’s appeal increased when the West Acres Shopping Center was built in 1972. Since the mid-1980s, new residential growth and retail growth have occurred in the south and southwest areas.

Fargo’s art culture grew as well. This is partly due to the three universities in the area. The opera, symphony orchestra, Plain Art Museum, the Fargo Dome, and community theatre are all prominent within the city.

The Fargo Theatre, a restored 1926 Art Deco movie theater features films and hosts the annual Fargo Film festival. Movies are prominent in the city too. This is partly due to the 1996 film “Fargo.” Although the majority of the movie was filmed in Minnesota, the Academy Award-winning film has movie props available for viewing.
