About Grand Forks

Historically, the city was dependent on local agriculture. BeforePrior to European settlement, the fork of the Red River and Red Lake River served as a meeting and trading point for Native Americans.

Early French explorers coined the area Les Grandes Fourches, meaning “The Grand Forks.” The area became an important trading post because of the trading and fur trapping the explorers did.

The United States got the territory from British Rupert’s Land with the Treat of 1818. Indigenous tribes dominated the area until the late 19 century. The area changed to Grand Forks when a U.S. post office opened in 1870.

"The Father of Grand Forks," Alexander Griggs earned the title after his crew unexpectedly spent the winter at Grand Forks. Griggs' steamboat froze in the Red River during a voyage in 1870. The city officially incorporated in 1881.

The population rose due to the area’s cheap land. Small family farms rose all over the area. Some investors bought thousands of acres for bonanza farms, where they cultivated and harvested wheat as a commodity crop.

Grand Forks continued to grow throughout the decads. The University of North Dakota established in 1887. In the 1920s, the state-owned North Dakota Mill and Elevator was constructed. The Grand Forks Air Force Base established in the 1950s. Interstate 29 and shopping malls soon followed in the 20 century.

Today, the area continues to bloom and offers residents art, culture, food, and higher education. As of 2019, the city is home to over 55,000 residents who enjoy the community feel, warm summer days, and chilly winter evenings. Looking to relax on those warm and chilly evenings?
